Britain needs compulsory voting

Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4961532.stm

OK, it’s yet another IPPR think piece and it’s not exactly the first time round the block with this one.

And it does seem a little extreme: basically it amounts to an admission of failure – so many people have become disengaged from the political process and show no signs of rejoining, therefore we are going to force you to vote!

Having said that, I think that it is worth a punt.

What I find difficult to work out though is how big the penalty should be for NOT voting? Death? Tar and feathers? Sitting in the Countdown audience?

I think the idea of compulsory voting completely misses the point of voting.
